A Catering business is a dream come true for many people, providing both financial security and an abundance of fun. But its not all smooth sailing, it can be a very challenging task costing you many hours of your life performing unnecessary tasks. In the past starting a catering business was a complete mystery to many people, however now you have all the tools you need at your fingertips right here on this site. It's amazing how many simple mistakes people make when going into the hospitality industry such as ...
Not enough knowledge
There is never enough hours in the day to learn everything there is to know about catering, from the food to the prices, to the employees and more. I'd suggest the first thing you really need to do is find a great book on the subject (such as The Starting a Catering Business e-book found on my website) and reading it from front to back immediately. Once you have gone through the book you can begin working on your business plan, staff etc and you'll be a lot better off than before.
Too much financial outlay
Often many people jump in the deep end feet first without any safety nets in place, spending thousands of dollars on expensive high tech kitchen equipment and facilities that really isn't needed. It may come as a surprise to you that often everything you need to start out with can be hired for a far cheaper price than purchasing it. Although this isn't a sound long term plan its a great way to first build up a reputation as one of the best caterers in your local community and get a strong client base with plenty of money flowing in before spending a fortune on expensive equipment.
Its also true that often 80% of businesses go broke in their first 5 years. This is especially true for caterers but can be easily avoided by simply testing the waters first, hiring equipment and spending as little initial outlay as possible to get the business off the ground and bringing in a profit as soon as possible. It's also a great way to ensure that this really is the career path you wish to undertake and that you enjoy it, for you may end up 3 months down the track discovering hospitality really isn't something you want to get into. Again a good book to help you figure out if this is the business for you is Starting a Catering Business (at my website) and the outlay of just a few dollars for a solid book is tiny compared to jumping into a career you don't really enjoy and wasting thousands.
The wrong Skillset
Another chief thread that runs amongst the failures in the catering business is those who love cooking and believe thats all there is to running a great catering business. Catering requires dedication, great time management and good planning ahead of time. Luckily all these skills can easily be learnt and if all are applied along with your knack for making great food your business will quickly be off to a running start, easily overtaking the competition and becoming on of the biggest and best catering companies in your area.
Thats all from me today, I'll be writing a few more catering articles in the near future so keep an eye out for them :)
