tibetan goji berriesAnti Aging Treatments - Antioxidants And Anti Aging Remedies

Anti aging treatments come in various forms, some of the most common are anti aging skin care products, anti aging therapies such as chelation and for some surgery. One crucial part of the anti aging equation is lifestyle, how we treat and what we put into our bodies. Getting this right can make a significant difference at any age. However the sooner you start good nutritional habits and looking after yourself physically the more youth and vitality you will have as you age.

Free Radicals and Oxidative Stress.

Briefly Antioxidants are the protective force against free radicals. If we have insufficient anti-oxidants in our diet or an excess of free radical generators then we suffer oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is a key link to heart disease, cancer and other diseases.

A healthy, nutritious diet can make people feel and look younger, here are some tips for using Antioxidants in your diet as an anti aging treatment.

Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Plants produce anti oxidants for their own defense but they also happen to protect us. Shop by color, intensity is the key, e.g. dark leaf greens.

Anti oxidants work better together, so take a variety rather than large doses of one.

Lycopene is a proven cancer fighter found in tomatoes, watermelon and red paw-paw, eat plenty.

Kale is the best antioxidant vegetable with the highest levels of lutein of any food. Exellent eye nutrition.

Berries top the chart as antioxidant super foods, and are high on the list of antiaging treatments. The ultimate antioxidant defense food being dried goji berries. They also contain several times the vitamin C than citrus and have the highest level of cartenoids of any plant.

Rooibos Tea is a rich source of antioxidants not compromised by caffeine. Note that milk added to tea negates the antioxidant benefits.

Red Wine - While red wine is nicer, red grape juice is better medicine, and although red wine is good for you the bad news is that, after more than one glass the alcohol content negates the benefits. Many people enjoy a glass of wine or a cocktail and although drinking in moderation is not an anti aging treatment it should not be a problem for those worried about the aging process. Moderation is the key.

When drinking alcohol - Milk Thistle is the best antioxidant herb for liver support. Also hydrate, take B vitamins and Vitamin C, eat and avoid sweet mixers. Avoid excessive amounts of alcohol.

Chocolate, good news here for an antiaging remedy, dark chocolate containing 70% cocoa is amongst the worlds most powerful antioxidants. Again milk added as in milk chocolate negates the benefits.

Devices that ionize and alkalize water also offer a remarkably inexpensive source of antioxidants. I.e. alkaline water scavenges active oxygen compounds including free radicals - it bonds with active oxygen to prevent oxidization.

Exercise is the best of anti ageing treatments it expands clogged up blood vessels to help remove waste through perspiration. Vigorous walking is great, try for at least four times a week of a minimum of thirty minutes, and don't be afraid to do more!

Eliminate stress, this is a topic on its own but important. See our blog for more on this.

Many people fail get enough sleep. A good nights sleep will help slow or reverse the aging process. Try to get at least eight hours every night.

Most of these anti aging treatments require a modest amount of discipline, remember good habits slow the Aging process.

Fat is Actually Necessary and Good For You!

What is fat?
Fat is one of the three macronutrients required to be eaten in relatively large amounts each day (the other two are carbohydrates and protein).

Fats and oils are officially known as lipids and they are insoluble in water. The difference between fats and oils is:

  • Fats - are solid at room temperature
  • Oils are liquid at room temperature
Not all fats are bad. Some fats, such as essential fatty acids, are actually very good for maintaining proper health - the body requires a certain amount of fat each day for good health. Classification of fat Fat is a type of nutrient also known as lipids. Lipids include the following types:
  • triglycerides (fats and oils) - these come in various forms, both saturated (usually found in animal food sources) and unsaturated (usually found in plant foods) fats. The most preferable type of fat to consume is unsaturated, but small amounts of saturated fat can be tolerated without ill effect, as long as it is part of a healthy, well-balanced diet full of whole foods (wholegrains and natural, unprocessed foods)
  • phospholipids - this is the double layer of fat that surrounds all cells in the body and needs to be maintained to keep cells healthy. Phospholipids are also found in various food sources, but the most abundant is lecithin (other food sources are eggs, liver, peanuts, soy and wheatgerm)
  • sterols - found both in plants (phytosterols) and in animal (cholesterol) foods. Sterols are necessary for producing many hormones, vitamin D, for creating bile (which helps to emulsify and aborb fats in the body) and for making cholesterol (the body also makes its own cholesterol from other nutrients in the liver)
Essential fatty acids

Essential fatty acids are those fatty acids that the body cannot manufacture on its own, so are required to be consumed on a daily basis to ensure good health. The two essential fatty acids (EFAs) are:

  • Omega-3 - is derived from linolenic acid. Omega 3 fatty acids are used to make cell walls supple and flexible and improve circulation by ensuring proper red blood cell flexibility and function. Omega-3 deficiency can cause a whole host of health problems - impaired memory, mental problems, tingling in the fingers, reduced immunity, high blood triglycerides and LDL ("bad") cholesterol levels
  • Omega-6 - is derived from linoleic acid. Omega 6 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties and are useful for improving skin conditions (eczema), PMS, rheumatoid arthritis and diabetic neuropathy. Omega-6 deficiency is rare, because most people in the West get more than enough of this EFA in their diet
One main function of EFA are to produce prostaglandins, which regulate bodily functions such as:
  • heart rate
  • blood pressure
  • blood clotting
  • fertility and conception
  • regulate inflammation
  • encouraging the body to fight infection
The body requires these two essential fatty acids in a specific ratio to regulate and maintain many functions within the body. The ratio recommended is 4 (Omega 6) : 1 (Omega 3), but in the West, the ratio is more likely to be anywhere from 10:1 to 25:1, which current research shows is very unhealthy.

fresh goji berryBeef Brisket- One Tough Customer

Texas ranchers thought it would be funny (and profitable) to send the toughest cuts of meat East at prime rates while they kept the more tender steaks and roasts for themselves.

They pictured their brothers in the East gnawing away on shoe leather while they enjoyed tender and juicy steaks. Boy, were they mistaken!

Since the price of the brisket was SO outrageous, people started talking about this wonderful Texas import and then they began visiting Texas looking to try some authentic beef brisket for themselves.

With that, the Texas ranchers sure had their work cut out for them. They had to figure out how to make shoe leather taste great or risk losing all their credibility with their buyers back East.

Using their natural barbecue instincts, the Texans cooked up the brisket the only way they knew how, low and slow, adding rubs and sauces along the way, and when they were done, they made a magnificient discovery - the beef brisket was even better than their roasts and steaks!

The relationship with their fellow Americans was saved, a second Civil War was averted, and they all lived to barbecue another day!

Just goes to show that those Eastern boys sure know their meats and those Texas boys can barbecue just about anything, even the soles of their shoes!

So if ever youre up to trying your own hand at smoking up some great brisket, here's the recipe for Texas Style Beef Brisket from the book, "Barbecue Secrets Revealed!," available at ...

http://www.Barbecue-Secrets.com

Texas Style Beef Brisket

12 -15 pound Brisket
Cajun seasoning or dry rub
Your favorite BBQ sauce
Salt and pepper

Begin by mixing together the Cajun seasoning, salt and pepper and rub into the brisket.

Get the charcoal going in the smoker and add a large chunk of hickory wood, which has soaked in water over night.

Put the meat on and keep the temperature between 150 and 250 degrees during the entire smoking cycle.

Put a water pan under the meat and add quartered potatoes, celery, onion and carrots to the water.

Cook the meat for about 3 1/2 hours in the middle of the smoker and then turn the meat so the other side is towards the firebox. Continue cooking for another 3 1/2 hours.

After seven hours of total cooking has elapsed, baste both sides with barbecue sauce and wrap the brisket in aluminum foil. Continue cooking the meat another 4 hours.

Do not let the smoker get too hot! A long cooking time at low temperatures (150-250 degrees) is what will turn that tough piece of meat tender and juicy.

After cooking for a total 10-12 hours, remove the meat and let stand for 10-15 minutes. Carve or gently pull the tender meat and its ready to impress your guests!

In case you're in need of a favorite Cajun rub and BBQ sauce, here are two of my favorites from the book:

Cajun Take No Prisoners Spice Rub

1 cup Sweet paprika
1 tsp Paprika
1 tbsp Black pepper
1 tbsp White pepper
3 tbsp Cayenne
1 tbsp Garlic powder
1 tbsp Onion powder
1 tbsp Salt
1 tbsp Rosemary

Blend spices together and rub into meat.

Amazing All Purpose Barbecue Sauce

1 cup Catsup
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
2 dashes Bottled hot pepper sauce
1 cup Water
1/4 cup Vinegar
1 tbsp Brown sugar
1 tsp Salt
1 tsp Celery seed
1 tbsp Minced onions

Combine ingredients in slow-cooking pot. Cover and cook on low 2 to 3 hours.

Makes 2 to 2 1/4 cups sauce.

And that ought to do it!

Happy smokin'! Dusty
